Together with the City of Rotterdam we did a project piloting smart PHEV technology.

What was it about?

Over a four month period 50 PHEV drivers participated in the electric city drive trial. The project was planned and executed in cooperation with the city of Rotterdam an the ERASMUS University Rotterdam looking to cut greenhouse gas emissions and to reduce traffic pollution in urban areas. The participants were living or working in Rotterdam (NL) and its surrounding and driving their PHEV through the city. Within the trial they could collect points to gain incentives like coffee vouchers from stores in Rotterdam by driving fully electric through certain areas in the city.

The eDrive Zone function was enabled in the PHEVs of around 50 voluntarily participating customers from the Rotterdam area. When entering the eDrive Zone defined for the Rotterdam inner city area, a corresponding message appeared on the Control Display of their vehicle - together with a request to set the drive system of their plug-in hybrid model to MAX eDrive mode, in which only the electric motor is used for the drive. A beta version of the iMiles app also enabled them to compete with other project participants, fulfill challanges such as frequent charging and thereby collect iMiles for various redeem options.

Some stats:

After only a few months, it was already clear that the drivers of plug-in hybrid models had covered around 90 percent of all distances within the Rotterdam eDrive Zone purely electrically, regardless of the type of reward.
